D ermal fillers provide instant rejuvenation of the skin with no downtime. Fillers play an essential role in achieving facial harmony to give a natural balance between volume, skin texture and skin tone. As the name suggest fillers provide volume, providing a safe non-surgical and effective method of lifting, rejuvenating and shaping of the face. Fillers last up to 2 years. This is one of my absolute favourite procedures-instant results, with no downtime- fillers bring out the ‘wow factor.’
- Dermal fillers can be used to replace loss volume, especially in the cheeks, tear trough, lips, corners of the mouth and nasolabial folds
- Fillers are the opposite to anti-wrinkle injections- fillers give volume and fill out wrinkles, whilst anti-wrinkle injections work by relaxing muscles that produce wrinkles and lines
- I select what type of filler best suits you depending on volume depletion, location and condition
- More volume enhancing fillers are used in areas such as the cheeks, whilst more fluid fillers are used in areas such as around the eyes and the upper lip
- Lip fillers can be used to reshape the lip and provide more volume
- I only we only use temporary fillers and never permanent fillers. Temporary fillers last between 5 months to 30 months
- Side effects from fillers are very rare, and results from fillers are instant
- I often combine fillers with anti-wrinkle injections and lasers to produce optimal results- addressing texture, tone and volume
- Fillers can also be used to treat acne scars
Here is only a small selection of before and afters by Dr Davin Lim. I usually perform 3 to 5 filler procedures daily, so to show you a variety of photos will be never ending.
Fillers can be used to treat volume loss, which essential to address facial harmony. I keep reminding patients that for facial rejuvenation we need to address skin texture, tone and volume. Fillers can also treat acne scars.
2mls of filler in the correct area makes a HUGE difference. This replaces loss volume in the mid cheek. This is the most common use of filler in my practice. Note the cheek lines are softened and the cheeks are higher- this give a more youthful appearance.
This is a more subtle change (good, not over the top). Note that the cheek on the right side is rounder and less flat. Too much filler and this patient will look unnatural.
Eye bags can be reduced with fillers. This is my favourite- my brother. Filler took less than 3 minutes, but that’s only for family! Most patients I give at least 20-30 minutes. Significant reduction in eye bags, with no down time.
Subtle and natural results is the endpoint of all filler treatments.
Subtle and natural results is the endpoint of all filler treatments.
Fillers can lift but also treat lines such as the groove between the mouth and the nose. Fillers can also treat jowl lines.

Fillers work by replacing loss volume, smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds.
Young and healthy skin contains a naturally hydrating substance called HA or hyaluronic acid. As you age, there is a loss of HA, this in turn causes loss of volume, and breaks down the scaffolding of your skin. This leads to unwanted folds, wrinkles, and hollows.
Fillers work by replacing loss HA, instantly giving volume and smoothing folds and wrinkles.
Remember fillers only address one aspect of aging- that is volume loss, optimal results seen when we treat texture, tone and volume.
This is the most commonly asked question and the differences are easy to understand. Anti-wrinkle injections relaxes areas and muscles, this in turn results in a decrease of dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles move with action, whilst static wrinkles are wrinkles present at rest.
An example of a dynamic wrinkle is one that is present when you smile. These are called smile lines or crows feet, or frown lines- these are best treated with anti wrinkle injections.
Fillers on the other hand fill. That is they can replace loss volume, or fill static wrinkles or lines. An example of a static line is your nasolabial for cheek fold, which is present at rest. Fillers work best to reduce wrinkles due to loss volume.
I firmly believe that combination treatments give the most natural results. In some areas I want to relax lines, in other areas I want to lift with fillers.
Absolutely. Even though they work by different actions, the use of BTX can prolong the duration of fillers, and enhance the overall appearance of the face. Remember, facial harmony is a balance between volume (fillers), skin tone, texture and relaxing certain muscles that produce wrinkles.
Fillers can work in different areas, including the lips, cheeks, marionette lines, chin, under the eyes, jowl lines and temples. Different patients will have areas that loose volume faster than in other areas, and a tailored approach to filling is best.
Fillers are also an excellent method of treating traumatic and acne scars, especially rolling and atrophic scars.
Dermal fillers Brisbane by Dr Davin Lim – I use leading fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and Boletero to give natural results.
Specialists prefer the HA family of fillers. We cannot mention this product due to TGA regulations, but will refer to it as the ‘JD’ of Hyaluronic Acid fillers. We prefer this brand due to the fact that it is manufactured using HYLACROSS technology, this in turn creates a smooth- consistency gel. It is also infused with a local anaesthetic to help with comfort during the injection.
Lately I have been using fillers by Galderma called E. These range of fillers are the latest generation of HA dermal fillers. They produce consistently excellent results. Dermal fillers Brisbane- for natural results, because looking natural never goes out of fashion. My choice for derma fillers Brisbane include Juvederm, Restylane and Boletero.
Yes, fillers have a safety record spanning over two decades with very few complications. I only use ‘natural’ fillers, namely HA fillers, and never permanent fillers.
Your specialist will discuss some rare side effects of fillers including-
- Lumpiness at the injection sites (resolves within days)
- Uneven contours
- Intravascular injection
The fillers most commonly used at Westside Dermatology are made from a natural substance found in your skin called HA or Hyuloric Acid. This means that side effects such as infection, skin reactions and allergies are reduced. We can abbreviate these fillers to call them JU, JU Vol, JU+, Res, and Ju Vob. and E.
The point of difference between fillers is how thick they flow, and their lifespan. Thinner fillers such as R, last 3-5 months, whilst thicker fillers that add volume such as JU Vol and E usually last beyond 24 months.
Thinner fillers such as JU Vob and Res are used where fine lines and delicate areas are involved, such as the upper lip, and eye areas.
TGA regulations means that we cannot name these fillers on the website. But a quick link here will tell you everything you need to know without breaking any regulations.
Before your appointment
We encourage you to do some research into what really bothers you and which areas you would like to improve. Sometimes the more research you do, the more confusing it can get, so remember our ‘texture, tone, volume’ rule for best results.
Also avoid any medications that can prolong bleeding such as fish oils, asprin and anti-inflammatories. This can reduce complications as well as bruising.
Choosing your Specialist- Dermal fillers Brisbane
Your specialist will closely examine your skin and determine what type of filler is best suited for your needs. Patients who have significant loss of volume may require a thicker, long lasting volume revitalizing filler, whilst fine lines and wrinkles require another type of filler- a more fluid easy flowing filler. Filling around the eyes can be very tricky, and Specialist such as Dr Davin Lim performs this procedure on a regular basis.
Most of our fillers come with lidocaine ( a type of anaesthetic) to improve comfort during the filling process. Most patients rate the pain as only 1-2 out of 10- much less painful than getting a filling done at the dentist! Even though the filling process takes only 15 minutes to perform, your Specialist will take time to plan areas that need the optimal correction. The planning process always takes more time than the filling process.
After the treatment
You should avoid the following for at least 24 hours after filler:
- Heavy exercise
- Extended exposure to sun or heat
You may experience pain, tenderness, temporary redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, and bumps at the injection sites. Studies have shown that these are usually mild to moderate in nature and clear up on their own in 7 days or less. If you experience swelling at the injection site, you can apply an ice pack for a brief period.
Dr Lim may give you specific instructions depending on injections sites- for injections sites such as the tear troughs or acne scarring, massaging the area for a day or two can decrease lumps.
The best thing about fillers is that results are instant! You will see results instantly. Depending on your metabolism, and what type of filler you receive, results may last up to 18 months. Some patients may require more than one session to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing and skin volume. ‘Touch up filling’ is generally recommended every 6-12 months to achieve and maintain optimal correction of wrinkles and folds.
The results of fillers are INSTANT and that’s why patients love this treatment. Maximal results with little or no downtime. What you look like with fillers depends on the areas treated. In most cases normal activities can be recommenced 24 hours after a filler- this includes fillers to the cheeks, around the eyes, temples and jaw line. Swelling and bruising is usually minimal.
Lips tend to swell for 24-48 hours, and given time will settle down.
Filler bruising and swelling can be minimized by the avoidance of fish-oils, Vitamin E, Anti-inflammatory medications, and blood thinners.
The very first step is a consultation to assess and discuss your objectives and expectations.
I will then formulate a treatment plan that uses the best scientifically proven products and the latest techniques will naturally restore and enhance facial harmony. Remember – it is the balance between texture, tone and volume that gives the most natural results.

The cost of fillers will depend on two factors- what type of filler is used, and how much is used. Personal facial volumizing is the most important factor in determining where to place the filler and how much filler is needed. Trusting a Specialist to decide how much filler to use and where it can be placed is the safest and the most sensible step in ‘volume replacement.
- Cheek reshaping and volume replacement range from $1090 upwards
- Acne scarring fillers start from $ 990- out of pocket. Medicare rebate applies if surgical subcsion performed

Fillers are one of the things that I find both challenging and exciting. Challenging in the way that each person will have a unique point of maximal gain from filling, and exciting in the way that it provides me with the tools for maximal rejuvenation – that it is addressing skin volume, whilst lasers and mini face lifts provide me the solution for correcting facial texture and tone. I feel that fillers are an absolutely essential aspect of achieving facial harmony, as if volume is lacking and skin tone and texture is adequate, the skin will still look old. The majority of men and women in their mid 30s onwards will have some form of noticeable volume loss on the cheeks, and often a tiny amount of filler in this area makes a world of difference. My personal viewpoint is that everyone in their late 30s should have a tiny amount of filler in a specific area of their cheek for facial rejuvenation. Fat loss occurs in nearly 100% of people in their mid to late 30s!
Skin tone deteriorates over the age of 45-50, and this is where laser resurfacing, eyelid surgery and mini-lifts come into play. Most patients in their late 30s will only require a tiny amount of filler- approximately 1ml-1.5 mls to make that difference in their appearance. The older you get, the more volume loss, once again I can not stress the importance of achieving facial harmony with skin texture, tone and volume.
